那么 / 那

nà me / nà

Expressing "then…" with "name"

那么 at the start of a clause draws a conclusion — "in that case".

那么 / 那 + Clause

How it works

他不听,那我应该怎么办? — he won't listen, so what should I do? Usually shortened to 那 in speech.

It responds to what was just said, which is why it typically opens the sentence.

This is a different 那么 from the one that intensifies adjectives.

Examples

  • tā bù tīng, nà wǒ yīng gāi zěn me bàn?

    他不听,那我应该怎么办?

He won't listen — so what should I do?

  • nà wǒ men míng tiān jiàn ba

    那我们明天见吧。

In that case, see you tomorrow.

  • nǐ bú qù, nà me wǒ yě bú qù

    你不去,那么我也不去。

If you're not going, then neither am I.
