这么 and 那么 mean "this" and "that" much — a degree pointed at rather than stated.

那么 / 这么 + Adj.

How it works

你怎么那么忙? — why are you so busy? The 那么 refers to a degree both speakers can see.

这么 points at something near or present, 那么 at something further off or already mentioned. In practice they're often interchangeable in exclamations.

They also introduce comparisons: 没有那么难 — not that hard.

Examples

  • nǐ zěn me nà me máng?

    你怎么那么忙?

    Why are you so busy?

  • zhè me guì, wǒ bù mǎi

    这么贵,我不买。

    It's this expensive — I'm not buying it.

  • zhōng wén méi yǒu nà me nán

    中文没有那么难。
