Expressing "and also" with "hai"

还 also adds something to a list — "and on top of that".

How it works

她有一个弟弟,还有一个妹妹 — she has a younger brother, and a younger sister as well.

This is close to 也, but 还 adds to what the same subject has or does, while 也 typically extends a statement to a new subject.

  • tā yǒu yí gè dì di, hái yǒu yí gè mèi mei

    她有一个弟弟,还有一个妹妹。

    She has a younger brother and a younger sister too.

  • wǒ hái xiǎng mǎi yí jiàn yī fu

    我还想买一件衣服。

    I also want to buy a piece of clothing.

  • tā huì shuō yīng wén, hái huì shuō rì wén

    他会说英文,还会说日文。

    He speaks English, and Japanese as well.
