HSK 4 Study Guide: 1,200 Words and the Vocabulary Grind

HSK 4 doubles the list again to 1,200 words — synonyms, formal register, and reading stamina become the game. A study plan for the volume phase.

By MandarinAI Team · Updated

HSK 4 is conventionally described as "conversational fluency on paper": 1,193 words, 598 of them new, and the level most universities and employers treat as the first meaningful credential. The challenge changes shape here. HSK 3 was about character literacy; HSK 4 is about sheer vocabulary volume and the fine distinctions between words that all translate the same way into English.

Plan for it to take roughly as long as everything before it combined. That's not a scare tactic — it's arithmetic. You're adding 598 words, more than the entire HSK 1–3 journey, and each one is on average rarer and more abstract than the last batch.

What's new compared to HSK 3

  • Formal, two-syllable vocabulary. Words like 经济 (jīng jì, economy), 社会 (shè huì, society), and 态度 (tài du, attitude) — the register of news and workplace Chinese rather than the kitchen table.
  • Near-synonym minefields. HSK 4 loves testing 经历 vs 经验 ("experience" as event vs as accumulated skill) and other pairs invisible in translation.
  • First idioms and fixed phrases — a handful of four-character expressions (成语) appear in reading passages.

How to study HSK 4

  • Let the scheduler carry the volume. At 1,193 words, manual review selection breaks down completely. This is the level where spaced repetition changes from "nice" to "the only viable approach" — the maths is in our spaced repetition guide.
  • Attack synonyms in contrast pairs. Keep a running list of confusable pairs and study them together with one distinguishing sentence each. Ten minutes on 经历/经验 beats fifty passive reviews of each.
  • Build reading stamina, not just accuracy. The exam's reading section is a time crunch. Read something every day that takes 10+ minutes of sustained attention; speed comes from volume, not technique.
  • Write a little, by hand or keyboard. The writing section asks you to construct sentences. Producing even three sentences a day exposes gaps that recognition-only review hides.
