wǎng

Expressing "toward" with "wang"

往 gives a direction of movement, and it lives in directions and instructions.

往 + Direction / Place + Verb

How it works

往前走 (go straight on), 往右拐 (turn right), 往上看 (look up). This is the language of street directions.

The 往 phrase precedes the verb. 往 pairs with direction words (前, 后, 左, 右, 上, 下) and with places: 往上海开.
