zhe

Aspect particle "zhe"

着 marks a state that persists — something staying in a condition, rather than an event.

Verb + 着

How it works

门开着 — the door is (standing) open. 我读,你听着 — I'll read, you keep listening.

The contrast with 在 is progressive versus continuous: 他在穿衣服 is he's putting clothes on, 他穿着一件红衣服 is he's wearing a red top.

着 also joins two verbs to say one happens while the other continues: 他站着说话 — he talks standing up.
