Counting money
Spoken money uses 块 and 毛; the written forms are 元 and 角.
Number + 块 (+ Number + 毛) (+ 钱)
How it works
In speech, 块 is the yuan and 毛 is the tenth: 五块三毛 is 5.3 yuan. Written on receipts and signs you'll see 元 and 角 instead.
The last unit in a spoken amount is often dropped — 五块三 is understood as 五块三毛. 钱 can be tacked on the end for clarity: 五块钱.
